You may be aware of the fantastically funny children’s book, Billionaire Boy by David Walliams, which has already been adapted into a film.
If not, you’re certainly missing out, but, you’re in luck as it has now been adapted to the live stage and is even more hilarious with songs and chorography added to heighten the fun.
“I am absolutely delighted this fantastic family show of my book is coming to the West End. It is really funny and I can’t wait to see it again.”David Walliams
I’ve not read the book, but have seen the film on TV a few years ago and was thrilled to learn that there is a theatre production of what is probably my favourite of David Walliams’ books – Gangsta Granny is a very close 2nd, which has already been made into a stage show back in 2017, but I am yet to see.
The story follows Joe Spud after his Dad’s success as the inventor of an innovative toilet roll, ‘Bum Fresh’ which makes them billionaires.
When we meet Joe, he is unhappy in his new posh private school, desperate for a friend, missing his Dad and his old lifestyle.
Who says that “Money can buy happiness”?
Have a look at the trailer to get a taste of this funny, feel-good, family show…
Ok, I already knew that this show would be hilarious, due to already knowing the story, but nothing prepares you for the larger-than-life characters, the catchy songs and fun, slapstick choreography that only the live theatre show can deliver.
It kept a theatre full of mainly under 8’s amused, hooked and entertained for the duration, even though, due to covid restrictions and social distancing we were not allowed to go walkabouts at the interval, but ice cream at your seat, seemed a not so bad substitute.
All the actors were great at their roles, the super-exaggerated characters were brilliant, such as bully twins, Jayden & Sapphire played by Matthew Chase & Rosie Coles and dinner lady, Mrs Trafe played by Emma Matthews.
But holding the whole story together, so brilliantly is ……who plays Joe, who’s journey we follow and empathise with and become wiser with him along the way.
This show is a must-see for all families who want a brilliant show that will keep the kids engaged, and to be honest, is very enjoyable for us, adults too!
A great addition to the summer holiday To-do list!
